People in Chennai love their movies as much as they love cricket. As fans returned to the cricket stadiums for the first time since the Covid-19 in India, fans at Chepauk made sure the atmosphere at the MA Chidambaram was buzzing during the 2nd Test between India and Chennai.
From signing birthday tunes for Ben Foakes to amping up the noise after Virat Kohli kept egging them on, the cricket fans lit up Chepauk as India romped to a 317-run win over England in the 2nd Test and went 1-1 level in the 4-Test series.
However, there were some amusing moments as well as a section of fans were spotted, in a viral video, asking England all-rounder Moeen Ali for “Valimai Update”.
For the uninitiated, Valimai Update has been a buzzword in Tamil Nadu as fans of actor Ajith Kumar have been waiting for months for the upcoming movie of their favourite star. Over the last few months, fans of the superstar actor have left no platform untouched to get a glimpse of Valimai, the movie under production which is produced by Boney Kapoor and helmed by H Vinoth. Only recently, the makers of the movie and actor Ajith had issued a statement, urging fans to be patient and wait for updates from the movie.
When Moeen Ali was fielding along the boundary ropes on Day 1 of the 2nd Test, a section of fans interacted with the all-rounder, apparently leaving him puzzled.
‘Was unable to control my laughter’
India off-spinner R Ashwin, in his latest YouTube show, shed light on the funny incident featuring him, saying a few fans in Chennai even asked him for an update about Valimai. Ashwin even revealed that Moeen Ali had walked up to him during the Test and clarified what the fans were upto when he was fielding at the ropes.
“There was a striking funny moment which showed how passionate and crazy people in Tamil Nadu are about our movies. ‘When I was fielding near the boundary one fan started shouting ‘Valimai Update’.’
“I didn’t understand anything at the moment. Later, when I googled it up, I was unable to control my laughter. How could I connect with ‘Valimai Update’ when asked about it during a Test match?” Ashwin said.
“Then the next day, Moeen Ali came up to me and asked ‘What is Valimai?’. Then I realized, fans have asked Moeen Ali as well for the update when he was fielding along the rope.
“It was extremely funny. Asking an England player for the Valimai update was outstanding. I can’t take it off my head.”
R Ashwin came up with an all-round effort for India in the 2nd Test. The off-spinner picked up 8 wickets and hit his 5th Test hundred as India hammered England to bounce back from the 1st Test defeat.
