Real Madrid will be without their German midfielder Toni Kroos for their must-win La Liga game against Villarreal on Saturday after testing positive for Covid-19. The defending champions need nothing less than a win in their final league game as they are involved in a two-way title race with Atletico Madrid.
Real Madrid said Toni Kroos returned a positive test for Covid-19 on Monday, having missed their win over Athletic Club on Saturday. The club said Kroos had come into direct contact with someone who contracted the virus. Kroos has been a key member of Zinedine Zidane’s Real squad this term, scoring three goals in 42 games in all competitions.
“Real Madrid C. F. announces that our player, Toni Kroos, tested positive in the COVID-19 test he underwent today,” read a club statement.
“Kroos has been in isolation since Friday, May 14 after having come into direct contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.”
Real Madrid are second in the standings, two points behind leaders Atletico who travel to relegation-battling Real Valladolid. A win would guarantee Atletico their first league crown since 2013-14.
